2014 in Review – 10 bands to know before the end of the year #1

Once again we are back with these infamous  end of the year series and this time, we would like to introduce to you some bands we individually discovered this year. They are also bands we do believe (hopefully) have bright days ahead of them and bands that you will probably hear from next year! Here are the first three of the series.

Named after the artisan, rooftop honey production movement in Brooklyn (and an episode of “How I Met Your Mother”—a great selling point for us), Oh Honey really is as sweet as it sounds.
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Oh Honey is singer-songwriter Mitchy Collins and vocalist Danielle Bouchard, and they’re joined by guitarist Ian Holubiak and drummer Robbie Ernst. Their folksy blend of acoustic-led indie pop is like a warm summer’s night on an apartment rooftop with your best friends. If you know anything about Mitchy Collins, you’ll know he’s a pro at writing catchy pop songs, and Oh Honey’s debut 2013 EP ‘With Love’ simply proves that statement right. Signing to Fueled by Ramen in February of this year after less than a year together, their beautiful second EP ‘Sincerely Yours’ only shows how well this fledgling band have gelled, and we cannot wait for what comes next. There’s no better soundtrack to keep you warm all through winter, so don’t sleep on this one—they’re a little bit more than special.

It’s no secret that the past two years have left the Welsh music scene in a bad state, but here’s the band that’s going to save it : after this year’s release of their debut album ‘The Balcony’, Catfish & The Bottlemen have gained a modest but strong following in the UK. With just enough sadness and anger in their lyrics, they’ll be the perfect fit for your ears if you like bands such as Deaf Havana and You Me At Six. The latter have praised them many times on social media, and that might be how I found out about them in the first place… Anyway, keep your eyes open for this band in 2015. The best is yet to come!

2014 has been great for Jake Mcelfresh aka Front Porch Step. First of all his first album ‘Aware’ was released late 2013 through Pure Noise Records, allowing Jake to meet a larger audience and do a lot of touring this year. This success went real when he performed at Warped Tour last summer, before everybody fell in love with the storyteller. His voice can get you wherever in the universe and that’s the greatest deal about him. Who wouldn’t be in love with the guy who wrote If I Tremble? Who wouldn’t want to hug the guy who wrote Island Of Misfit Boy?
Now Front Porch Step‘s newest EP, ‘Whole Again’ just came out a few weeks ago. It makes a wonderful way to spend the Winter drinking hot chocolate under your blanket, contemplating life. He will be back next year at Warped Tour, getting bigger and bigger.
