EP review: Four Year Strong – Go down in History

In 2011, Four Year Strong left us with a hiatus and only gossips about a potential breakup of the band. But after three years, they decided to be back this summer with a real pop punk EP, ‘Go down in History’. The bearded quartet from Massachusetts, who’s currently performing on the Warped Tour across the US during the entire summer will release their new tracks on July 22nd.

After they left Universal Motown, where they produced and released their last album “In some way, shape or form” (it was a disappointment to a lot of fans), they eventually returned to their previous label, the pop punk / hardcore label Pure Noise Records. And it seems to be a back to basics for Four Year Strong. And it’s for the best.

‘Go Down In History’ EP includes 5 songs which emphasizes their pop punk strength. Each one of them contains, exploding guitars, energetic drums, raw pop punk vocals, group singings and a bit of anger. In sum, all you need for a perfect joyful pop punk song. But it’s also marked by some hardcore elements, with some screaming parts, getting back to this easycore sound that characterizes Four Year Strong. It feels great to hear these original vibes again, after the band tried –not so successfully- to make some changes in the way they sound.

The EP starts with What’s in the box, an aggressive track which expresses some anger with some heavy riffs, but a catchy rhythm. It continues with Living Proof of a Stubborn Youth and Tread Lighty which is their first realased single from this EP, and it’s easy to understand why. This song represents the direction taken itself by FYS on this record. The two last tracks, Go down in History and So You’re Saying There’s A Chance… close the EP smoothly.

Track after track, the excitement never falls down. With ‘Go Down With History’, we are happy to welcome back Four Year Strong in all their glory. These are also songs that must be perfect fit for a live performance, as they sound promising. This EP is stunning and we can now say that Four Year Strong still and definitely have a lot more to give in the future!
